Plextor University - Firmware

Firmware

The firmware contains set instructions for the operation of the drive. Functions such as: ejecting the tray, reporting error blink codes, and servo motor control. During the write process, the firmware plays a key part in controlling the quality of the write. When a blank disc is placed in the drive. The media's ATIP (Absolute Time In Pregroove) is read to find out the manufacturer's specifications such as the dye used on the media. Using the manufacturer's write strategy for supported media is a much more accurate way to set the laser power than relying solely on the OPC return information.

This is just one of many benefits with using Plextor drives. Plextor custom designs and develops its own firmware, printed circuit boards (PCB), and servos for each of our drives. This allows us to have a wider range of control over our firmware, and allows us to constantly update our media compatibility list with newer write strategies. That is why it is generally recommended to keep your firmware up to date.

Firmware Flash PROM

All Plextor CD-RW and 40 Max CD-ROM drives use a Flash PROM (EEPROM, or Electrically Erasable PROM), which can be upgraded by downloading a firmware upgrade file and simply executing the file through Windows.

The UltraPlex 32 Max uses an EPROM (Erasable PROM programmed by using ultraviolet light). The firmware upgrade for this drive is accomplished by physically replacing the Firmware chip with a later version chip.
